Chloramphenicol (CAP) is a bacteriostatic antimicrobial that became available in 1949. It is considered a prototypical broad-spectrum antibiotic, alongside the tetracyclines, and as it is both cheap and easy to manufacture it is frequently an antibiotic of choice in the Developing World.
Due to the potential hazard, CAP is now forbidden to use in animal production in many countries, such as EU, USA, Japan and China. The residue detection requirement is also among the most strict ones.
